family vacation 08

for our family vacation, we went up mt. graham to spend a weekend with the whole family. it was alot of fun. john was able to take off work, so we loaded up our trailer and off we went. it was so nice to be out of the valley, and out of the heat. it was nice and cool up on the mountain. it rained at least once each day. luckily we were in a cabin so we stayed pretty dry. the only casualty was nikki's bed, which happened to be under one of the leaks. the kids had fun playing with all their cousins. they especially enjoyed looking for earth worms. they tried to bring them home, but all the moms put their foot down-no earth worms in the car! we went on several drives, and spent one afternoon at the lake, where john made a homemade fishing pole. the kids all enjoyed "fishing". we enjoyed spending time with our family, brothers and sisters, and cousins.

my accident-prone little boy.

what am i going to do with him? david is very accident prone. the other day he fell off the kitchen chair. this in and of itself is not unusual. he falls of the chair more than anyone i know, but this time he happened to be sticking out his tongue when he did it. the result? a very bloody mouth. poor kid. he screamed, and i came running. luckily the bleeding stopped quickly, and the cuts don't look too deep. they heal pretty quickly anyway. then later that same day, he found a set of random keys. i have no idea what they go to, but he found them. anyway, he found the one electrical outlet with out a child-proof cover on it, and of course stuck them in. there was a flash and he screamed. i think he got a little shock (he said that it hurt), but the keys fell out of the outlet, so i don't think it was too bad. i ran his fingers under some cold water (they were black from the spark, luckily it washed off) just in case he got burned, and called the doctor. they gave me a list of things to look for and thank goodness he was okay.

our garden

so this year we decided to try planting a garden. my parents have a large garden and were able to harvest a number of veggies last year, so we thought we'd try. we have a very small backyard, but we figured out where we could squeeze in a few rows of corn, carrots and tomatoes. john got all excited and went out a planted everything with very little preparation. we were lucky. things actually grew! everyday we go out and water our little garden. a couple weeks ago we dug up our carrots. they were very long, but oh so skinny. i guess we planted them too close together. our corn did real well also. it finally got tall, and started growing ears. we tried one the other day, and apparently it wasn't ready. john and nikki both spit it out. unfortunately, the stalks are dying. so are our tomatoes. the heat is just wiping them out. we never got any tomatoes from it. oh well. it was worth a shot, and we tried, and we learned. we are already planning for next year!
